Welcome to the MIS Department
A Message from the Chair

The MIS major prepares students to enter the business world and work with computer based information systems utilizing microcomputers, web applications, and computer networks. The program is particularly well suited for students who enjoy working with microcomputers and prepackaged computer software, including word-processing, spreadsheets, database management systems, distributed and e-commerce systems.

Careers in MIS

Graduates of this program find diverse career opportunities in small businesses, large corporations, nonprofit organizations, financial institutions, manufacturing, the health care industry, and education. Federal, state, and local governments are also major employers of computer information specialists. After graduation, an information specialist may choose to work with development of software, networks, databases, e-commerce applications, or training and education. The new track option will allow the student to prepare for a career with a technical emphasis or a focus on the management of technology. Typical job titles or positions for new graduates include: programmer, computer systems analyst, webpage designer, webmaster, network administrator, data administrator, application developer, and many others.

Student Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professional

The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) is the premier professional organization for business people involved in all aspects of the use of computer based information systems. Students have the opportunity to enrich their education, develop organizational skills, and enjoy social interaction through our student chapter of AITP. The student chapter is affiliated with and sponsored by the Dallas Chapter of AITP. The group has regular meetings, participates in regional and national conferences and competitions, hosts the annual high school programming competition, and provides the student with opportunities to interact with practicing professionals.

We hope that you will contact us about the exciting opportunities available in the Information Age, and learn how your MIS degree might help you be successful.
